Insect mesh for ventilated cladding
Ventilated timber cladding relies on an air gap behind the boards so the wall can dry out. That gap needs open vents at the bottom and top, and open vents invite insects, wasps and small birds. Cladding insect mesh is a perforated or woven strip that closes the vent opening to pests while still letting air move freely.
Where it is used
- At the base of the cladding, behind the bottom board or under a starter trim.
- At the top of the wall, under the soffit, eaves or coping.
- Around window and door reveals where the cavity is open.
How much to order
Measure the full length of every cladding run that needs a vent, then add around 10% for laps, corners and cutting waste. Choose a strip width that covers the full depth of your battens, so there is no gap at either edge. Most building guidance calls for a continuous vent opening at the bottom and top of the cavity, so check your wall detail before you buy.
Fixing and installation
Fit the mesh to the face of the batten line before the first board goes on, and staple or clip it so it stays flat. Overlap joins by a few centimetres. Keep it clear of the damp proof course and do not block the cavity with insulation or debris.
Choosing the rest of the system
Mesh sits behind any profile, from external timber cladding to larch and western red cedar. Our timber cladding guide explains battens, gaps and ventilation in more detail. If you are unsure which width suits your build, call us on 0161 504 0011 or send the details through the quote form. Shop prices include VAT and UK delivery, and many items ship next day.
