Traditional featheredge weatherboard cladding
Featheredge cladding uses boards that taper from a thick edge to a thin edge, fixed horizontally so each board overlaps the one below. The overlap sheds rain and creates the deep shadow lines of classic English weatherboarding, the look of Kent and Essex barns, coastal cottages and modern black-clad homes.
Standard or rebated featheredge?
- Standard featheredge: the classic tapered board, overlapped by around 25mm. Economical and ideal for outbuildings, sheds, stables and garden rooms.
- Rebated featheredge (Dutch featheredge): a rebate machined into the back of each board locks it neatly over the board below, giving consistent straight lines, a fixed overlap and a more weatherproof, premium finish. Our premium rebated black painted featheredge is 28 x 195mm.
Black and white painted featheredge
Factory painted black featheredge cladding is one of the most popular cladding finishes in the UK, giving a bold modern farmhouse look that contrasts beautifully with brick, glass and render. White painted boards suit coastal and New England styles. Factory coating gives an even finish on all faces, and matching SertiWOOD® featheredge wood finish is available for cut ends and future re-coating.
How to install featheredge cladding
Fix vertical treated battens at 400 to 600mm centres over a breathable membrane. Start at the bottom with a starter batten so the first board sits at the right angle, then work upwards with the thick edge down. Fix each board once, just above the overlap, with stainless steel or ring-shank nails so boards can move independently. Treat or paint all cut ends.
Featheredge cladding FAQs
How much does each board cover?
Cover depends on the overlap. Standard 175mm boards cover around 150mm when overlapped by 25mm. Rebated boards have a fixed cover width shown on each product.
Can featheredge boards be used for fencing?
Yes. Featheredge boards are also used vertically for close board fencing. See featheredge fencing.
Does black painted featheredge need maintenance?
Factory finishes typically need re-coating every few years depending on exposure. Use our matching finish for touch-ups.
Can I see a sample?
Yes, order a free featheredge sample.
