How timber ages
Both cedar and larch are durable woods that weather to a soft silver grey if left untreated. This is a surface change and not a sign of failure. If you prefer to keep the original colour, apply a UV-protective oil or stain once the timber has been installed, and repeat as it fades. See our finishes and treatments.
Posts and spacing
- Posts carry the load, so use a suitable post for the height of the screen, set firmly in concrete or fixed to base plates.
- Keep the timber off the ground. A gap at the bottom reduces rot and makes it easier to cut the lawn.
- Tall solid screens catch the wind. Leaving small gaps between slats lets some air through and helps a screen stand up to gusts.
How much to order
Measure the run of fence, divide by the panel width and round up. If you are building from slats, work out the number needed by the height and gap, then add 10% for waste and trimming.
Fixings
Use stainless steel screws, particularly with cedar, which can stain around plain steel. Choose A2 for most inland gardens and A4 near the coast. See screws, nails and accessories.
