Structural roofing timber and cedar shingles
From the rafters to the finished roof covering, we supply quality roofing timber for builders, roofers and self-builders across the UK.
C24 structural timber
C24 is a strength class for softwood under BS EN 338. Each piece is graded for strength, making it suitable for rafters, joists, purlins, wall plates and decking frames. Our treated C24 is pressure treated against rot and insects and available in popular sizes:
- 3 x 2 inch (45 x 75mm)
- 4 x 2 inch (47 x 100mm)
- 5 x 2 inch (47 x 125mm)
- 6 x 2 inch (47 x 150mm)
- 8 x 2 inch (47 x 200mm)
Joist and rafter sizes must be designed for the span and loading. Use span tables or ask your structural engineer or Building Control.
Western Red Cedar shingles
Cedar shingles are a beautiful, lightweight and naturally durable roofing and wall covering. We supply Certigrade Blue Label No 1 premium shingles, Red Label No 2 shingles and matching ridge and hip caps. Learn more in our Western Red Cedar shingles guide.
Roofing timber FAQs
What is the difference between C16 and C24?
C24 is stronger and stiffer than C16, so it can span further or carry more load for the same size.
Can cedar shingles be used on walls?
Yes, cedar shingles make a striking wall cladding as well as a roof covering.
What pitch do cedar shingles need?
Typically a minimum roof pitch of around 14 degrees with a reduced exposure, and steeper pitches allow more exposure. Follow the shingle grade guidance.
