Choosing decking boards for a UK garden
Decking boards are the visible surface of a deck, laid across a frame of joists. The right choice depends on how much maintenance you want to do, how the deck will be used and how long you expect it to last. Our range covers several species, so you can compare them side by side.
Decking options
- Siberian larch: a dense, naturally durable softwood that weathers to a silver grey. See Siberian larch decking.
- Thermally modified timber: heat treated for stability and rot resistance without chemicals. See Thermowood decking.
- Yellow balau: a hard, dense tropical hardwood with a long outdoor record. See yellow balau decking.
If the deck will be wet a lot, such as near a pool or on a shaded patio, read about anti-slip decking before you order.
How much to order
Measure the deck area in square metres, then work out the linear metres of board by dividing by the board width plus the gap. Add about 10% for offcuts and mistakes. Boards laid on a diagonal need a little more.
Laying the boards
- Support the boards on a level frame with joists at 400 mm centres. Our decking substructure joists are made for this job.
- Leave a gap of 5 to 8 mm between boards so water drains and the timber can move.
- Where boards are grooved, check the manufacturer guidance on whether to lay the groove side up or down. Many people lay the grooved face up for grip.
- Keep the underside ventilated. Air must be able to move beneath the deck, and ground should be covered with a weed membrane and drained.
- Seal cut ends with end-grain preserver, and use pedestals on hard surfaces such as roofs and patios to lift the frame.
Use stainless steel decking screws, pre-drilling near board ends to avoid splitting. Find them in screws, nails and accessories.
Finishing and maintenance
Any decking can be left to weather naturally, or you can apply an oil to keep the original colour. Sweep off leaves and brush the surface now and then to stop algae building up. Our finishes and treatments include oils suited to decking.
