Timber fencing posts

Posts are the backbone of any fence, carrying the weight of the panels and resisting the wind. Choosing the right section, length and treatment makes a big difference to how long the fence lasts and how straight it stays. Check each product page for the section size, length, species and treatment.

Choosing the right post

• Match the post section to the fence height. Taller fences need thicker posts.
• Allow a third or more of the post length to be below ground, so a 1.8 metre fence needs a post long enough to go into the ground by at least 600 mm.
• Choose posts that have been pressure treated or are naturally durable for ground contact.

How many posts?

Divide the fence run by the panel width, allowing for post thickness. A straight run needs one more post than panels. Add extra posts for corners, gates and changes of direction, and heavier posts at gates.

Setting the posts

• Dig the hole about three times the post width.
• Set the post on a layer of gravel for drainage.
• Use fast-setting concrete or post mix, and slope the top of the concrete away from the post.
• Check for plumb in both directions and brace until set.

Concrete spurs or post supports can also keep timber off the ground, which helps the posts last longer.
