Planed finishing timber
Planed finishing timber is softwood or hardwood that has been machined smooth on all sides, often described as planed all round (PAR) or planed square edge (PSE). Because it is smooth and accurate in section, it is the standard choice for trim, frames, skirtings, fascias and general joinery details where a clean finish matters.
Typical uses
- Window and door surrounds, architraves and frames.
- Fascias, soffits and cover strips beside cladding.
- Shelving, battens and furniture components.
- Edge trims and finishing pieces for decks and garden buildings.
Nominal and finished sizes
Planing removes material, so the finished size is smaller than the sawn size it started from. A 50 by 25mm sawn piece, for example, finishes a few millimetres smaller after planing. Always check the finished dimensions when ordering and when designing a detail, rather than assuming the nominal size.
Choosing the right type
For exterior use choose a durable species or a treated softwood, and seal all faces and ends with paint, stain or oil. Indoors, kiln dried timber is more stable. For finishes, see our finishes and treatments. Planed pieces pair well with external cladding and internal cladding.
How much to order
Measure the total run in metres, add 10% for cutting and defects, and think about standard lengths to minimise joins. For non-standard sizes or special species, see bespoke cladding or send details through the quote form. Many items ship next day, and prices include VAT and UK delivery.
