Where to use wood wall cladding
Feature walls in living rooms and bedrooms, headboard walls, home offices, hallways and stairs, kitchen islands, bathrooms with good ventilation, ceilings and vaulted roofs, saunas (see sauna timber), shops, bars, restaurants and offices.
How to fit internal cladding
Let boards acclimatise in the room for 48 hours. Fix horizontal battens to the wall at 400 to 600mm centres (or fix directly to sound, flat plasterboard with adhesive and pins), then secret-fix boards through the tongue with clips or pins. Start from the bottom with the tongue facing up, stagger joints and leave a small expansion gap at floors, ceilings and corners. Finish edges with matching corner trims.
Internal wall cladding FAQs
Can I fit wood cladding directly to plasterboard?
Lightweight boards can be fixed to sound plasterboard with construction adhesive and pins, but battens give a flatter, stronger result and allow for cables behind.
Is timber wall cladding fire safe indoors?
Timber is fine for most domestic rooms. For escape routes, commercial and public buildings, check Building Regulations Approved Document B and consider a fire retardant treatment.
Do I need to finish internal cladding?
Pre-finished boards are ready to fit. Natural boards can be left bare or finished with a clear or white wax oil.
