Air dried European oak with real character

Each beam is air dried slowly over several years and then planed on all four faces to reveal the rich golden colour and medullary ray figure of European Oak. Natural cracks, splits, surface checks, knots and colour variation are part of the character of air dried oak and do not affect its strength. Some further checking and small movement is normal as the beam settles into a heated room.

How to fit an oak mantel beam

Fix only into solid masonry using heavy-duty fixings, such as concealed mantel brackets or threaded steel rods resin-anchored into the wall. Do not fix to plasterboard or stud walls alone. Always keep the beam a safe distance from the fire: follow your stove or fire manufacturer's clearance to combustible materials and Building Regulations Approved Document J, and if in doubt ask a HETAS registered installer.

Finishing and care

Supplied planed and unfinished, ready for oil, wax or hard wax oil. A hard wax oil gives a durable, natural satin finish that brings out the grain. Dust with a dry cloth and re-oil occasionally to keep the oak looking its best.
