Softwood external cladding

Softwood is a popular, cost-effective choice for cladding houses, extensions, sheds and garden buildings. Species such as spruce, pine and larch offer a warm, natural look, and each performs differently outdoors, so check each product page for the species, profile, size and any treatment. For longer life, see the larch cladding page, as larch is naturally more durable than many softwoods.

Where it is used

  • House and extension elevations.
  • Sheds, workshops and garden buildings.
  • Fencing backdrops, gables and porches.

How much to order

Measure the wall area and deduct windows and doors. Divide by the cover width of one board and multiply by its length to find the number of boards. Add 10% for waste. Check the cover width, not the overall width, on the product page.

Fixing and ventilation

Fix to treated battens over a breather membrane, leaving a ventilated gap at the top and bottom, and use insect mesh at the base. Use stainless steel or suitable coated nails and screws; see screws, nails and accessories. Seal cut ends before fixing.

Finishing

Untreated softwood weathers to grey. To keep the colour, apply a stain, oil or paint and plan to recoat every few years. Browse finishes and treatments. For fire-sensitive projects, see our fire retardant cladding guide.
