Tongue and groove cladding profiles
Tongue and groove is a board profile where a raised tongue on one edge fits into a groove on the next. The boards interlock to give a flat, continuous face with tight joints. It is one of the most widely used cladding profiles in the UK, suitable for both interior and exterior walls. See the full choice in our external and internal cladding ranges.
Why choose tongue and groove
- Neat, uniform look with minimal visible gaps
- Can be secret nailed or fixed with clips, leaving the face free of fixings
- Allows each board to move a little with changes in moisture
- Available in several species, including Siberian larch, western red cedar and Thermowood
Orientation outdoors
Outside, vertical or diagonal boards shed water well. For horizontal boards, a groove facing upwards can trap water, so fit the tongue edge upwards and the groove edge downwards, and check the guidance for your specific profile. Where in doubt, vertical fixing on horizontal battens with a ventilated cavity is the safest approach.
How much to order
Tongue and groove boards have a cover width smaller than the overall width, because the tongue sits inside the groove. Use the cover width. Divide the net wall area by cover width multiplied by length to find the number of boards, then add 10% for waste. Round up to the next whole board.
Fixing
- Fix to battens to form a 20 to 25 mm ventilated cavity outside.
- Fit insect mesh at the base and top.
- Secret nail through the tongue with stainless steel nails, or use secret fixing clips.
- Leave a small expansion gap at the edges and seal cut ends.
Finishing and maintenance
Finish all faces before fitting where possible, because a small amount of shrinkage can expose unfinished edges, particularly on painted boards. Explore finishes and treatments for oils, stains and paints. Wash occasionally and recoat as the finish wears.
